St. Maarten Shopping

This depends what you are shopping for and when you may want to go shopping. On the French side in Marigot you can find European fashions, fragrances, and liquors all at duty free prices. There is also a fine selection of leather items and gold jewelry. Every Saturday and Wednesday, the waterfront plaza area features locally grown foods, crafts and lower prices tourist items (Tee-shirts, hats, towels, etc.). Prices are generally fixed but if you are buying several items you can barter. Shopping is very limited in Marigot on Sundays. Tourist items may also be purchased in several stands located near the public parking area of Orient Beach daily.

The Dutch side offers even more opportunities in downtown Philipsburg. Just about everything offered on the French side can be found here- as well as electronics and photography supplies. When several ships are in- the crowds can be difficult. The best time to go in town is on Saturdays or weekdays when only one or two cruise ships are in port. Everything is closed on Sundays unless there is a ship in port - and usually only a limited number of stores will be open.

Food and beverages of very high quality - mostly imported from the U.S. can be purchased at the local markets or several large supermarkets. Most of the larger markets feature fresh foods and meats-again imported from either U.S. or South America. Fresh fish can be purchased at supermarkets or at local fish markets through out the islands (one is located at Simpson Bay near the bridge and is only open Monday through Saturday in the early A.M.) Hint: when buying canned soda - you can typically mix the flavors and/or brands and still get a case price - usually about $8.00.

Shop by category:

What is duty-free shopping?

US citizens
, regardless of age, who have been out of the country for a minimum of 48 hrs and have not used their respective duty-free allowance within 30 days are entitled to a $600 duty-free tax exemption. Families traveling together can pool their exemptions . Alcohol: The duty-free allowance for US citizens age 21 and over is one quart, the value of which must be included within the $600 exemption.

Canadian citizens who have been out of the country for a minimum of 7 days are entitled to a duty-free exemption of $750 Cdn. They are also permitted a duty-free exemption of $200 Cdn each time they are out of the country for more than 48 hrs. This $200 exemption may not be claimed during the same period as the $750 exemption, nor can your exemptions be pooled with your spouse and/or children . Alcohol: The duty-free allowance for Canadian citizens who meet the legal age of the province they re-enter is 40 ounces of wine or liquor or two dozen 12-ounce cans of beer, the value of which must be included within the yearly or quarterly exemption.

Currency: Traveler checks and major credit cards are widely accepted. ATM machines are located all over the island. U.S. Dollars are accepted at most locations. However, some French side stores give cash back in Euros.

Liquor & Tobacco

Want to experience true St. Maarten liquor? Then, try Guavaberry, which is the legendary Island Folk Liqueur of the island. Again, while this is a duty-free island, there are limitations on the quantity of liquor you bring back from the island. The duty-free allowance for US citizens age 21 and over is one quart, the value of which must be included within the $600 exemption.
