St. Maarten Activities

Just about every activity on St. Maarten takes place on, in, or near the water. Besides swimming, activities include sailing, deep-sea fishing, kayaking, surfing, wind-surfing, parasailing, jet skiing, water-skiing, snorkeling, and diving. Hiking, museums, casinos, and off-shore excursions are also popular. You won't be disappointed in St. Maarten's selection of activities.

St. Maarten Artists

On the French side, an association started called ARTLOVERS, in which over 50 artists publicly displayed their art. It's not uncommon for these events to be set up in the streets. While some artists participate for the sheer love of art, others, such as the well-known Roland Richardson, attend these events (and his gallery in Marigot). He is known as the “Father of Caribbean Impressionism” while others know him for his art on the French stamp (only sold on the French side). So whether you're into individual artists or want to enrich yourself in St. Maarten's ethnic art museums, there's something for everyone.

St. Maarten Art Museums

Whether you're into individual artists or want to enrich yourself in St. Maarten's ethnic art museums, there's something for everyone. Two note-worthy museums exist on St. Martin. On the west side of Front Street in Philipsburg is the St. Maarten Museum. It contains several Amerindian Indian artifacts, as well as items from the earliest settlers and period furniture. On the French side, the museum mainly consists of artifacts form several indigenous archeological sites. The most notable archeological site is the Hope Estate on the north side of the island. Digging is still taking place, and guided tours are occasionally available. Call the museum for information.

St. Maarten Biking

Biking is popular due to the many trails that cross over the mountains to different populated regions. Local guides can be procured that guarantee the best trails to explore based on ability and time constraints. Beginners can ride along the deserted Cay Bay coast to Fort Amsterdam at Divi Little Bay Beach or Mullet Bay. Advanced riders can rest their skills in the more challenging Bellevue Loop, from Port de Plaissance to Marigot. For sheer beauty, explore the biking trails on and below Pic Paradis. For spectacular views of Marigot and the harbor, use the bike trails to Fort Louis. Don't forget your camera.

St. Maarten Golf

If golf is your game of choice, then you're in luck. However, there's only one golf course on the island. Mullet Bay Golf Course is the island's only golf course and offers a full 18 holes near several lagoons. There are excellent views of Mullet Bay from the golf course, and the course is just a short walk from the beach. This is a fairly challenging course, designed by Joseph Lee. There are other courses on other islands close to St. Martin, so the option is always available to island-hop to play elsewhere.

St. Maarten Hiking

Hiking is popular on the island due to the many trails that cross over the mountains to different populated regions. Paradise Peak, on the French side, is the highest point on the island and can be reached part way by vehicle, but eventually must be approached by foot. Local guides can be procured that could guarantee all the best trails can be explored based on ability and time constraints. Several fortified areas existed at one time, and two fort remain today. Fort Williams in Philipsburg is a difficult climb and is not well maintained. Another is Fort Louis in Marigot. St. Maarten Watersports

Sailing from small crafts - one to two persons - is available in the Orient Bay area or from vendors near the hotels of Nettle Bay on the French side on Simpson Bay. Large yacht sailing is available on a day trip basis from several marinas. This includes private charters or individual purchases on regularly scheduled excursions that usually include a day visit to St. Barth's - or snorkeling at an offshore island. Multi-day private charters (typically one-week duration) are also very popular on St. Martin. One can actually leave and return to St. Martin - or visit St. Martin's waters from other gateways (British Virgin Islands, Antigua). Also, one can originate or terminate a multi-day cruise with operators that specialize in one way charters. Consult a travel agent or vendor before you arrive for the later options.

One can also observe sailboat racing by taking a cruise on a yacht that has participated in the "America's Cup" race. Be prepared for fast paced action on these high performance sailboats. Also - every year the Heineken Regatta is haled for four days in early March. From all over the Caribbean, world class yachts of every variety (over 200 in 1998) participate in several racing categories. One can charter a boat, help as a crew person or observe from shore - to individually participate. Nightly parties culminate the day's activities.

Diving is available from several vendors located throughout the Island. Hotels also offer dive packages. The diving on St. Martin is known to be good to very good on several reefs, wrecks, and nearby islands to the north of the island.

Snorkeling is also popular in these same areas. Several boats offer sailing, snorkeling, and lunch at moderate prices. Saba is noted for its world class diving and Anguilla is noted for its especially good snorkeling. Upon arrival, check with local tour operators or dive operators through your hotel for St. Martin activities.

Quality deep-sea fishing is available from Bobby's Marina in Phlipsburg, and several vendors in the Simpson Bay region of Cole Bay or the marina area of the French side. A boat of up to six passengers costs between $400 and $800 USD per day and usually includes equipment and refreshments. Several times a year, fishing tournaments are held - some support local charities (see Calendar of Events). Several world class records have been established around the waters of St. Martin.
